GREEN BUILDING
Environmental Building News is one of the most authoritative sources of news related to green building, both residential and commercial. Their monthly newsletter is informative and void of ads.
The City of Portland’s Office of Sustainable Development has assembled a rich resource of information on green building for residential and commercial projects.
The Oikos web site is one stop shopping for links to books, on-line resources, case studies, and other green building resources.
The McAdams Group has developed a niche market for locating and securing grant money and financial incentives for green building projects. You’ll appreciate Jan’s enthusiasm and knowledge.
The Development Center for Appropriate Technology is on the bleeding edge of advocating for the integration of new building materials and construction methods. Their Director, David Eisenberg, is to be commended for his work with state and municipal building codes.
The EPA’s web site on Indoor Air Quality provides a number of articles and strategies on enhancing indoor air quality in homes and offices.
The Lighting Design Lab in Seattle conducts research and detailed studies of daylighting performance in buildings. Joel Loveland’s knowledge of daylighting is valuable to tap during the early design stages of projects.
CONTRACTORS & SUPPLIERS
Environmental Building Supplies carries a wide range of green building products. They are careful to represent only products that meet their criteria for being green.
HumaBuilt provides a number of pioneering green building products, from the Durisol wall-forming system I use, to wheat board doors.
Durisol is one of the best wall-forming systems available on the market for custom homes.
Cascade Lighting is an excellent source for commercial and residential light fixtures. They provided me with the Finelite S12-1D indirect/direct T-5 HO fixtures for my office. Doug Oppedahl’s knowledgeable of energy-efficient lighting and controls is exemplary.
Moberg Fireplaces has developed a modified Rumford fireplace that is energy-efficient, provides more heat that it exhausts, utilizes 100% outside air for combustion, and is flexible to design with.
The Collins Company is one of the main providers of sustainably harvested wood (certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, FSC) in the Northwest. The Cannon Beach “Net Zero” residence utilized their FSC wood for the formwork, framing, cedar columns, and cherry cabinetry.
COLLABORATING DESIGNERS & CONSULTANTS
Andy Stricker, PE is a structural engineer specializing in residential and small commercial projects along the Oregon Coast. He’s one of the few engineers in the Northwest that has experience with the Durisol wall-forming system.
Czopek & Erdenberger Georgia Erdenberger and Linda Czopek have assembled a talented group of interior designers and are leaders in green interior design. Their project for the Bonneville Power Administration was awarded the USGBC's LEED Silver certification. Georgia and I had a blast collaborating on the design of the residence in Cannon Beach.
GreenWorks is a talented group of landscape architects who have a solid handle on sustainable design practices.
Brightworks is one of the leading LEED and sustainable development consulting firms on the West Coast. We’ve had a great time working with Scott Lewis and his team on a number of projects over the past few of years.

ORGANIZATIONS
I was introduced to the advocacy work that PSR is doing through Kent Bransford, who delivered a compelling presentation on the health implications of global climate change.
The Gordon House at the Oregon Garden is the only building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in Oregon and the only one in the Pacific Northwest that is open to the public.
The Mount Angel Abbey Library in Mt Angel Oregon was designed by one of my architectural heroes, Alvar Aalto. The library is the best example of designing for daylighting to be found in the Northwest.
The BetterBricks web site is a rich accumulation of case studies, interviews, and resources for commercial green buildings, with an emphasis on energy efficiency.
PUBLICATIONS
Environmental Design and Construction. Check out the story I wrote for them in October of 2001, “Learning from a Library”, about the daylighting at Alvar Aalto’s Mt Angel Abbey Library
Trends publishes a number of quality magazines on residential design. They are distinct in the high number and quality of photos they use with little advertising. In 2005, they published a story on the home I designed in Cannon Beach titled “Natural Wave”
Fine Homebuilding magazine has been a rich source for design and construction ides for years. I wrote an article, titled “Zero Energy – Infinite Appeal” for their 25th anniversary issue that appeared on the new stand in February 2006.
Statesman Journal. This is our local paper that has run a number of articles on green building and sustainable development. A number of these articles have included our projects and quotes from Nathan. |
